Clashes erupted between fans from both sides before the World Cup 2019 encounter between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Headingley. Later the clashes continued even after the match got over. Tensions ran high amongst supporters in the match marking it as the 1st instance in this world cup 2019 to witness an eviction of fans from the premises.
The ticketless fans cheering for their teams from outside the stadium turned on each other and started vandalizing stadium property. Thereafter the instigators are booked by the Yorkshire police and banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for rest of the matches.
The fight started after an Afghan fan accidentally brushed past a Pakistani supporter. In return, Pakistani fans started beating up Afghan fans which incited the supporters to a critical law and order situation.
Speaking from Leeds on the issue. Sunil Kalra, founder, curator, Global Sports Fan Awards, said, “It’s a condemnable act by over frenzied fans of Pakistan and Afghanistan. On behalf of Global Sports Fans and as the curator of GSF awards, I request the ICC to ban the fans who initiated the fight from attending the matches in the tournament.”
ICC said that it was “aware of some scuffles among a minority of the fans”. Hence was” working with the venue security team and the local police, to ensure there were no further incidents.
“We don’t condone this type of behavior and will take appropriate action against any anti-social behavior that spoils the enjoyment for the majority of fans,” the ICC said.
thewordsplay requests the fans to maintain their calm. Moreover at the end of the day it is just a game of cricket and not war.
