A few months back, the Delhi government floated tenders for initiating a totally new project. Through this project, Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party (aap) government is willing to give free WiFi access to the citizens of Delhi.
On Wednesday, Delhi’s chief minister Arvind Kejriwal announced an inauguration date of December 16 for this project.
- Users will get 15 GB data per month, with a speed limit of up to 1.5 GB data per day.
- The cost of the entire project is Rs.99 crores
- Every WiFi hotspot device will have a range of 100 meters
- And a maximum of 200 people can connect to one Hotspot at a time.
At the press conference on Wednesday, Kejriwal said that the aap government will bring free WiFi to the citizens of Delhi in various phases. Under the first phase, a total of 11,000 WiFi Hotspots will be installed across various areas of the city. Out of which, 4,000 Wi-Fi hotspots will be installed at bus stands. And the rest will be installed in marketplaces and other high-density areas.
The Aam Aadmi Party (aap) government even promised that the users will find a WiFi hotspot within every ½ Km range.
Mr. Arvind Kejriwal further added:
With this free 15 GB internet data usage being provided to people, we (aap) have fulfilled all promises made in our manifesto for the 2015 Assembly polls.
Moreover, there will be 100 Hotspot in every assembly segment.
Along with that, he even mentioned that the WiFi scheme is based on a rent model. The Aam Aadmi Party government will pay a monthly rental to each Hotspot provider.
Now the main question is, How it will work?
Similar to other free WiFi networks, the aap government will also offer an app to connect to the network. Furthermore, the app will require users to complete a KYC process to gain access to the network. And after that only, a user will be able to enjoy the free WiFi service.
Once a user is connected, he/she can move between different zones without a need to connect again and again. The device will automatically connect to the next available Hotspot.
But there is a limitation to the free WiFi scheme of Delhi’s aap government.
Every user of this WiFi scheme will get 15 GB data per month and one can only use up to 1.5 GB per day.
In addition to that, this network will provide an average speed of 100-150 Mbps in most areas. However, the speed will differ considering the density population of the area. The highly populated areas can get speed up to 200 Mbps whereas low-density areas will get an Internet speed up to 80 Mbps.
As further mentioned by Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, this WiFi scheme will be totally free. And there is no mention of it getting monetize in future either.
Basically, it’s a win-win situation for the citizens of Delhi.
Regardless of it being an election motivated scheme, if implemented well, it can be very useful to the citizens of Delhi.
